About
Bio
Amina (pronounced Ah-min-uh, not Ameena) Ahmad is an artist and maker living and working between Maryland and Washington, DC. Having grown up in the rolling hills and wild woods of Southern Maryland, I have always been found inspiration and grounding in nature. In 2008, I graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Science and Policy from the University of Maryland, and have spent many years during school and since exploring the sustainability of the handmade through my all natural candle company, Handmade Habitat. I have also worked with various arts organizations including Fenton Street Market (Silver Spring, MD), Off the Beaten Track Warehouse (Washington, DC), and the Brookland Arts Walk (Washington, DC) to organize craft markets, pop-up shops, open studios, cultural and community events to uplift the creative communities I have been proud to belong to over the years. In 2015 I co-founded the Unofficial Hand Lettering Society of Silver Spring (MD) with my good friend Christy Batta, a club with free monthly meetings, workshops, and community events open to all people wanting to explore the art of hand lettering that ran from 2015-2023. I am also a certified RYT-200 yoga teacher. Today, I continue to seek inspiration and restoration in nature and aim to pass that love on to my two children.
Artist Statement
My work explores patterns, movements, and meditations in nature and through my personal yoga practice, which is currently manifesting in a variety of work including colorful pastels on paper, black and white embroideries on fabric, and a combination of both black and white and colorful motifs in clay. As a mother of two young kids, matrescence is another theme I often explore, embodied through pastel in the softness and fogginess of memory, the strength and tenderness of parenthood, and the shifting identity of motherhood.
